Every November the studio fills up with families in tinsel, reindeer antlers, and sweaters loud enough to hear from the parking lot. The Ugly Christmas Sweater family portrait started as a joke and became one of our most-booked seasonal sessions.
Why it works
Traditional matching-outfit family portraits ask everyone to be their most polished self at the exact same moment — which is why toddlers cry and teenagers scowl. The Ugly Sweater portrait does the opposite: it gives everyone permission to be goofy on purpose, which is when the real smiles happen.
How to pose the group
Stagger heights so nobody is fully hidden, put the loudest sweater at the edge of the frame (not the center), and let the kids in front hold the props. Then we make you all do one "serious business" frame — those are the ones that end up printed.
What to wear: choosing the sweaters
Coordinate, don't match. Pick one shared theme — reindeer, snowflakes, lights, or a single color family — and let each person interpret it. Avoid tiny busy patterns on everyone at once; one or two loud sweaters read better on camera when the rest of the group keeps the background quieter. Bring a plain backup top in case a sweater turns out to be too warm under studio lights or too distracting in the frame.
Props and pets
A few simple props go a long way: Santa hats, antler headbands, a wrapped gift box, or a string of lights. Ask us before bringing pets so we can plan the set and timing around them.
